Loved the part in which he stepped in to play the “I would be DELIGHTED to rip you into shreds should anything happen to Toby” role in Tybalt’s absence. And I would say that Madden were my new boyfriend, were it not for the fact that (as per Arden) he himself has a fairly possessive SO. I kept thinking of the Ninth Doctor – just this once, everybody lives! Fantastic! Of Things Unknown had me on the edge of my seat until the very end, when I started grinning fit to burst. And now that Simon’s a threat again, until Oberon comes back…I suspect Toby is going to get to have those words she wants to have with Oberon and Titania eventually, although she may get a little tongue-tied when the opportunity arises! I’m now having thoughts about the earthquake that shook the walls, and the changling child that broke walls, given the timing of all that and August’s disappearance. Very exciting to finally find out more about the prophecy about Amandine’s line, even if we still don’t know who her mother was. The pixies are amazing! “You let me out of a jar once!” ♥ I’d love to see more of their world. I loved seeing Toby’s kindness serve her so well with the pixies. Toby’s learnt to be kind (as Simon noticed), because she’s needed kindness more often than August or Amandine ever have, and she’s learnt to trust others, and that there’s more to saving the world than throwing yourself at the problem and being willing to die. But she and Toby are alike enough that they’re just going to butt heads till the end of time, and she hasn’t had as many life lessons as Toby. She’s got an urge towards heroism, and now she’s experienced loss and failure. I was still shocked by how cruel she was to Toby, though. She’s not so much a general antagonist as she is a general obstacle…she’s got her own priorities and isn’t above hurting people to get them. But she’s Firstborn, and she’s broken, and she’s never really grown up. She’s had moments of being a better person, and while we knew from the Luidaeg that she was doing all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons, I really had hoped, for Toby’s sake, that she could be redeemed. This book has really hammered home for me what a dreadful person Amandine’s become. I was reading on my phone while cooking dinner and I had to put my phone down and hop in a little circle over the perfection of it. Honestly, I thought mermaid karaoke was going to be the comedic high point, but the Luidaeg? Destroyed me. Have fun, and try not to bleed on the carpet.
